Technology Developer/Chief Technology Architect – EIA

Join the team of the most influential environmental NGO leveraging intelligence and investigations to enact systemic and permanent change in the sustainable management of the world’s natural resources. This new position will be responsible for launching new approaches to integrate information technology development to EIA’s tactics, strategies and solutions. An example of an immediate project includes a fully funded effort to build and implement revolutionary new software tools that allow communities and governments around the world to battle illegal logging and other forms of deforestation.

The position will represent the center for excellence at EIA for technologically innovative approaches to our central mission of solving the biggest global environmental challenges. EIA is at the forefront of creating new mechanisms to the global trading system to hold powerful corporations to account for environmental and human rights impacts and to give a stronger voice to affected populations. For over 30 years, EIA has pioneered the use of innovative investigative techniques to expose environmental crimes and reveal the full impacts of diffuse global supply chains – combining its unique investigations with hard-hitting campaigns to battle environmental crime and enact historic new policies.

Main Activities and Responsibilities

  • Take the lead within a team of highly experienced environmental campaigners to design and implement software and other technical solutions, to solve the biggest global environmental problems, including climate change, deforestation, protecting environmental defenders, and combating poaching of endangered species such as elephants;
  • Lead the creation, design, development, and implementation of revolutionary solutions to bring transparency to global supply chains for deforestation-causing commodities, including wood products, soy, beef, and palm oil;
  • Engage with global technological community to find the most relevant systems, examples, initiatives and available funding sources;
  • Apply lessons learned to create and implement one or multiple projects with governments and/or companies around the world;
  • Engage with global decision-makers to create momentum and support for these new systems
  • Restructure the use of technology within EIA to expand the organization’s impact and ability to connect with the public and influence policy-making.

Essential Qualifications:

  • An intense passion to use your software development skills to change the world for the better;
  • At least five years software development experience;
  • Ability to quickly study, assess and absorb the state of the art in relevant technological systems applicable to the efficient and effective management of global supply chains;
  • Experience designing and implementing user-friendly people-focused technologies that engage the user to be an active consumer of information;
  • Experience developing and implementing strategies to influence policy-making and/or corporate cultures;
  • Flexible, innovative thinking to find new applications for currently-existing technologies, and to envision new systems where none currently exist;
  • Experience creating and implementing innovative technical solutions for global problems;
  • Familiarity with designing and/or implementing systems database architecture.
