Policy Analyst, Climate Campaign

The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) is a 501(c)(3) independent, international, non-profit advocacy organization based in Washington DC with a quarter century record of causing systemic change to protect the Earth’s environment. Over a quarter century, EIA has established unique methods, including pioneering the use of undercover investigations, and audio and video recordings to expose environmental crime and drive change.

EIA is seeking a full-time Policy Analyst for its Climate Campaign, which centers on award winning efforts to rid the world of the worst climate super-pollutants, including hydroflourocarbons (HFCs) which are thousands of times more destructive than CO2. Ten years ago EIA launched the campaign to amend the Montreal Protocol to phase out HFCs which culminated in the Kigali amendment last year. The work will be based in our Washington DC office. The position will entail a diversity of activities, including:

• Conducting research, outreach and developing content that promotes a phase-down of HFCs domestically and internationally;
• Advocating HFC phase out in different fora, as well as low-GWP refrigerant alternatives to HFCs;
• Reviewing and analyzing scientific and technical documents including on industry standards related to broadening uptake of low-GWP alternative technologies and producing briefings, analyses and reports;
• Researching the current science on technical aspects; interface with leading minds in this field; review and summarize results for internal EIA briefing documents;
• Producing reports, fact sheets and briefing papers on for a variety of audiences, including policymakers, enforcement officials, NGOs, and the private sector;
• Attending meetings in DC and conducting outreach to relevant stakeholders, including academics, US policy makers, NGOs and industry members;
• Assisting the Climate campaign in other tasks as and when needed;
• Maintain a general knowledge of recent and relevant information on climate change policy and debates.

Requirements:

• Background in chemistry, engineering, environmental science/policy and/or forestry;
• Previous exposure to and general understanding of the issues surrounding sustainable development and climate change;
• Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel are a must; basic statistical/ econometric skills desirable;
• Ability to summarize and communicate complex technical concepts and ideas in written form understandable to lay audience;
• Must be able to be located in EIA’s Washington, DC office;
• Fluency in Chinese and/or Spanish a plus;
• Attention to detail, strong organizational skills and willingness to work under time constraints and pressure.
