LETTER: Leaked Letter of Holzindustrie Schweighofer

EIA has exposed the largest forest products company in Romania, Holzindustrie Schweighofer, of buying illegally harvested timber and incentivizing additional cutting through a bonus system.

Romanian media released a leaked letter from the CEO of Holzindustrie Schweighofer to the Romanian Prime Minister demanding a recent forest law be amended, threatening consequences to trade relations between Austria and Romania if not. Schweighofer's opposition to the forest law comes as it threatens the company's business model. Download the leaked letter here.

Holzindustrie Schweighofer is an Austrian-based wood products company, which processes the majority of Romania’s softwood timber into semi-finished wood products, primarily for export to the EU, Japan, and North America.
